Bisley Team 7 times between 1963 and 1989, including Commandant in 1972, and Vice Captain in 1989. He was a member of the Palma Team on five occasions including Captain in 1979 and Adjutant in 1982. In 1976 John was selected as the Assistant Technical Director for shooting sports for the Olympic Games. He was inducted into the Canadian Forces Sports Hall of Fame in 1977.
In addition to his shooting ability, John was widely recognized for his leadership and organizational abilities. He was elected as President of the Ontario Provincial Rifle Association and the Quebec Provincial Rifle Association; he served as Executive Vice President of the DCRA from 1971 to 1972; he was made an Honorary Life member of the National Rifle Associations of Great Britain, United States of America and South Africa. John was a Senior Life Governor of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association.
John worked tirelessly to promote good relationships between other shooting organizations in Canada and for the enhancement of the image of the DCRA. In 1991, when the decision was made to construct the DCRA headquarters building at the Connaught Ranges, John threw his full support behind the project and became a prime mover in the fundraising efforts. Again, he led by example and made a substantial contribution to the project. One of his last acts for the DCRA was the donation of a legacy to be used for the assistance and encouragement of young shooters.
